Roundtable Meeting for Governments and Regulators (Europe)

The RIPE NCC held a Roundtable Meeting for Governments and Regulators in the European Region on Thursday, 26 January 2023. The meeting was attended by 44 participants in Brussels and another 34 online from a total of 15 countries.

RIPE NCC Managing Director Hans Petter Holen and RIPE Chair Mirjam Kühne will give an introduction to the two organisations and present a brief overview of what each is currently working on to highlight the ways in which this work intersects with public sector concerns and opportunities. 

11:30 - 12:30

The Internet in Ukraine

Four different speakers will present different angles on the situation in Ukraine, including a technical view of the Internet’s challenges, the point of view from inside Ukraine, community efforts to keep Ukraine connected and the RIPE NCC’s response in support of its members. The presentations will be followed by a discussion with all participants about how to move forward and work together to support the Ukrainian Internet.

Internet Sanctions at the RIPE NCC and Beyond

RIPE NCC Chief Legal Officer Athina Fragkouli will explain the impact of EU sanctions on the RIPE NCC’s operations and members. Beyond the RIPE NCC, researcher Farzaneh Badii will give an overview of the impact of sanctions at the technical level as part of a research project aimed at helping governments minimise the impact of sanctions on connectivity and end users.

EU Regulatory Developments

The RIPE NCC and RIPE will present their response to the proposed Cyber Resilience Act and efforts to develop a DNS Best Current Practices Task Force. We will also have time to discuss the controversial “sender pays” topic with participants.

Fragmentation and Global Internet Governance

RIPE NCC Advisor to the Managing Director for Global Strategic Engagement, Chris Buckridge, will give an overview of the current Internet governance landscape and some of the major challenges and opportunities ahead, including the WSIS+20 review and the UN Global Digital Compact.
