RIS Quarterly Planning
We have three objectives in publishing our quarterly planning:
- We want to be transparent about the work we are doing
- We want your input on that work and our planning, and we want to document that input, and let you know if and when we can add your suggestions to our planning
- We want an open dialogue with members and community on developments around RIS
We launched this initiative in Q2 2022, and we are open to improving what we publish here and how we do that. So let us know if there are ways we can better present our plans.
We will update this page as our activities progress and continue to share updates on RIPE Labs, on the RIPE NCC Membership Discussion, MAT Working Group (WG) and RIS Users mailing lists, and at RIPE Meetings and other events.
Q1 2025 Plans
Last updated: 16 December 2024
Item 1: Improvements to RIS data through peering coordination
In addition to our selective peering strategy, we are adding Route Server feeds. We also shared information about our new peering strategy on RIPE Labs.
Status: In progress
Item 2: Improvements to route collector infrastructure
We are working on improvements to our route collectors. This includes both an operating system update, as well as experiments with a lightweight collector that can collect BGP data without multihop peering.
Status: In progress
Item 3: Monitoring data volume
Some events at RIS peers cause a high data volume that affects data collection. We are adding monitoring that allows us to intervene before this affects processing delays.
Status: In progress
Item 4: RIS/RIPEstat data processing migration
Over the past few years, we have been working on a financially sustainable solution to store Internet Measurement historical data. As part of these efforts, we will be looking into alternatives to store big data related to RIPEstat, which are currently managed in the recently reduced Hadoop environment.
In 2025, we want to take the next step and migrate the RIS/RIPEstat data processing to a new architecture. This will be a long-term activity due to the current code that depends on Hadoop. Our investigation focuses on reducing our dependency on HBase, implicitly reducing our dependency on Hadoop, and evaluating more efficient alternatives.
Status: In progress
Community Input on Planning
We want the community to contribute to our plans and suggest additional work items. Please share your comments with us or post them on the RIPE NCC Membership Discussion, MAT WG and RIS Users mailing lists. We'll also monitor all the other channels where people talk about these services.
When we receive feedback that can significantly impact our planning or that needs a further response, we will add it to the table below.
Archived Quarterly Plans
You can find our plans from the previous quarters on this page. The Q1 2025 plans will be archived once we publish the Q2 2025 planning.
