You haven't said what the semicolon and the part after it are for.
(Well, I'm assuming that you aren't including them just to spell "yes"
unusually. :-)  To quote one of my favourite stories, "I can make an
excellent guess.  I hate guessing.".
This actually sounds like a not-too-bad idea.  As you point out, it has
problems, but so do all solutions, and the patient is sick enough that
we'll probably have to amputate _something_ no matter what we do.
May I repeat it elselist?
