Sustainability
Athens is promoting sustainability through several key initiatives aimed at enhancing urban living and environmental stewardship:
- Urban Greening and Mobility: The city is revamping its centre with improved pedestrian zones and bike paths, alongside a substantial increase in green spaces, including significant investments in parks like the National Garden and the new Elaionas park.
- Infrastructure and Sanitation: Efforts include road and public space enhancements, alongside clean water and waste management programmes, to keep the city clean and well-maintained.
- Energy and Resource Efficiency: Athens is focusing on reducing energy consumption through the use of low-energy equipment and lighting in public buildings and schools, in addition to Athens International Airport's ambitious plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025.
- Pocket Parks: Small-scale green spaces are being created in urban areas to combat pollution and provide residents with accessible nature spots, contributing to the city's overall environmental and social well-being.
