Getting from the Airport to the City Centre

The Airport

Almaty International Airport (IATA: ALA) is located 25 km from the city centre, the airport is small, and sometimes several flights depart around the same time. Plan your arrival on time. Check-in desks open around three hours before flight departure and you are not permitted into the check-in area until the desks for your flight have opened.

By Car

It generally takes about 30 minutes to reach the city centre by car.

By Taxi

Estimated time: 25-50 minutes

You can book a taxi from the airport to the city centre at a fixed rate of 9,000 KZT. Alternatively, you can use a taxi app, such as Yandex Go, for a lower fare.

By Train

There are two railway stations: Almaty-1 and Almaty-2. Almaty-2 is located in the city centre, Almaty-1 is about four kilometres from the centre. Most trains end at Almaty-2, but some lower-class trains end at Almaty-1.

Useful Information

Currency

The official currency in Kazakhstan is Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT). You can exchange currencies in many of the banks in Almaty. Exchange offices are widespread with some open 24/7 and, often, have good rates and charge no commission. Notable banks include the National Bank of Kazakhstan, KZI Bank, Kaspi Bank, or Citibank Kazakhstan.

Credit cards are accepted in major supermarkets, restaurants and bars, but this is usually limited to Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

Local Tip: Ask for a good mix of smaller bills.

ATM

Almaty makes cash access easy with numerous ATMs strategically placed around the city, especially in busy areas, shopping centres, and near banks. These ATMs gladly accept international credit and debit cards, ensuring convenient money withdrawal for travellers.

Language

Kazakh language is the official language of Kazakhstan. The Russian language has the status of the language of interethnic communication. English is not widely spoken, so learning a few basic phrases in Kazakh or Russian can be helpful.

Transportation

Public transportation is available, but it may be limited in remote areas. Taxis and shared minivans (marshrutkas) are common. Roads in some regions can be challenging, so plan accordingly.

Kazakhstan Transportation Tips

  • Consider using buses, marshrutkas, or taxis for travel within cities.
  • Road-tripping is not recommended due to rough roads and non-uniform traffic rules.
  • Intercity buses and flights are available between major cities.

Timezone

Kazakhstan operates in the UTC+6 timezone.

Emergency numbers

In case of emergency, please call "101" (Fire services), "102" (Police), "103" (Ambulance), "104" (Gas service), "112" (Rescue service in emergency situations).

Weather

Kazakhstan has a continental climate. Pack accordingly for temperature variations, especially in mountainous areas. September is ideal for tourism with milder temperatures, making it suitable for outdoor activities and trekking.

Cultural Etiquette

Respecting local customs and traditions is crucial. Kazakhstan is predominantly Muslim, so visitors should be mindful of cultural norms, particularly when visiting religious sites.

Kazakh people are known for their hospitality; reciprocate with politeness. Remove your shoes when entering someone's home.

Water and Food Safety

While tap water in urban areas is generally safe, it is recommended to drink bottled or boiled water, especially in rural regions. Exercise caution with street food and ensure that food is prepared hygienically.

Internet and Communication

Internet is available in urban areas. Purchase a local SIM card for connectivity.

Electricity

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Kazakhstan are one of the two European standard electrical socket types: the "Type C" Europlug and the "Type E" and "Type F" Schuko. If your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in.

  • Adapter for "Type C" European CEE 7/16 Europlug
