RIPE NCC Roundtable Meeting Discusses IETF, Internet Security and RIPE Policy Development
Held twice a year, these meetings provide an important opportunity for those in the public sector to learn about issues relating to the RIPE NCC, the RIPE community, Internet number resource policy and Internet governance.
A new inclusion on the agenda of this Roundtable Meeting was a presentation by Olaf Kolkman (NLnet Labs) on the ecosystem of organisations that includes the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). The presentation looked at how these organisations work to develop standards through open, transparent processes, and discussed the relevance of this work to public policy makers. Attendees were keen to discuss the IETF's work in network security and its liaison with other international standards organisations. Government representatives welcomed the opportunity to learn more about the IETF and related organisations, and encouraged those IAB members present to continue with efforts to engage the public sector.
The remainder of the agenda was structured around updates from RIPE NCC staff, including an overview of the RIPE NCC Survey 2013, which noted the membership's strong support for the RIPE NCC's ongoing efforts to engage with governments. Of particular interest to attenddees was an update on RIPE policy developments, including discussions around inter-RIR transfers and the removal of need-based requirements for IPv4 address allocations.
Slide decks from each of the presentations delivered during the meeting are now available online, along with a list of meeting attendees.
