It is *all* in perl. So you need a reasonably stable perl interpreter and
little else.

Directly into the database files, plus logged.

Yes. With an older version of th software.

I would suggest that you at first just set up the database
stuff w/o guardian accounts and test the normal update
procedure. Once that works set up the guardians.
