As a separate observation, dynasties are the antithesis of bottom up process and it's quite surprising to see this being proposed seriously. I'm all in favour of aspiring towards having benign philosophers, and perhaps we've been lucky that all two chairs so far have fallen into this category. But if the position of RIPE chair has responsibilities, it's probably safe to assume that someone non-optimal will fall into this position at some stage, and maybe we need to look at this debate from a different point of view, namely talking about how to get the wrong person out, as much as we need to talk about how to get the right person in.
