My Michigander probe had a USB memory failure many years ago. My quick fix was to use a USB to CF Card adapter with a 16GB CF card that had been deemed too small for DSLR use. I had forgotten about it until reading this thread.

The probe should work with almost any USB storage device within probe power deliver limits.
