I like both...
... but I'm a bit afraid that the effort of communicating across the
distance will take away the energy & focus needed to do the coding...

(but again, the same could be said for "alone vs team" dichotomy ;-)

So I would say : allow distributed teams, but encourage local teams...

Does that make sense?
