MAIL-FROM case sensitive?

Anyone,

  Is email address authentication using the MAIL-FROM lines really supposed
to be case-sensitive?  It seems to be so on our implementation (and is 
causing a *lot* of questions and bounces).  

  If it is intended this way, is there some gotcha we're likely to discover
if we make it case-insensitive?
