Hi Warren! >> So, even to run for the board, I had to resign. > > This seems… unfortunate. > > I can understand why it would be a conflict for someone to serve in both of these roles *at the same time*, but it seems perfectly reasonable for someone in a position like your to declare that, if elected, they would step down from the ASO. > > I did have a look to see if I could figure out what the history of this is, but wasn't able to. Do we know if this was simply a corner case which was overlooked, or was there discussion (e.g preventing disruption, not wanting a small cohort of people swapping roles, preventing weird gaming, etc)? I think it was a corner case that was overlooked, and it was just made consistent with the rules for multiple employees/partners/affiliates/etc of the same company being on the board (see section 4 of https://www.ripe.net/media/documents/Candidate_Statement.docx_4.pdf). I talked to Athina, and she confirmed that it was written this way to avoid problems in case someone changes employment and suddenly wouldn’t be able to serve on the board anymore. The check is therefore a one-time declaration before the election rather than an ongoing requirement. (This technically also means that I can now run for my own ASO AC seat again :) Fun fact: no questions were asked about me being an Arbiter, which seems to be a stronger conflict than being an ASO AC member… I have already sent my “I’ll resign if elected” statement to the other Arbiters, but that wasn’t a requirement! I think the bylaws need to be tweaked a little bit for these edge cases. Cheers! Sander
