Dear colleagues, The five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) are asking their communities for guidance on how they should participate within ICANN in the future. In 2017, an independent review of the Address Supporting Organization (ASO) was completed. The review found that the ASO is one of the better-organised and more efficient parts of the ICANN system, is transparent and accountable, and is viewed by many as a critical part of the ICANN structure. You can read the full review here: https://www.nro.net/wp-content/uploads/ASO-Review-Report-2017.pdf The final recommendation of the review was that the NRO should initiate a public consultation with the five RIR communities to decide on the future structure of the ASO. The NRO Executive Council accepted this recommendation and is currently undertaking a consultation based on the issues identified in the review: https://www.nro.net/aso-review-consultation-2018/ We have included more background information on this consultation and the ASO in an article on RIPE Labs: https://labs.ripe.net/Members/antony_gollan/deciding-on-a-future-path-for-the-internet-number-community-within-icann There will also be a presentation and discussion on the ASO review in the Address Policy Working Group at RIPE 76. Remote participation options will be available for those who cannot attend the meeting in person: https://ripe76.ripe.net/programme/meeting-plan/ap-wg/ We now invite RIPE community members to send any comments or thoughts on the future of the ASO to <ripe-list at ripe.net> by 30 June. We will report back on the input we receive and the next steps at a later stage. Kind regards Axel Pawlik Managing Director RIPE NCC
