Societal Benefits of Freely Accessible Technologies and Knowledge Resources A book edited by Oswaldo Ter�n and Jose Aguilar To be published by IGI Global: Introduction Freely accessible technologies and knowledge resources have generated important societal benefits and have become highly valuable and promising. They have been possible thanks to Free and Open Source Technology development projects, involving diverse communities and social processes. Very well known cases are the communities developing Linux, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Wikipedia. The maturity of these communities has allowed the emergence of Associations, Institutions and Foundations, such as, the Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Initiative. Also, communications via conferences, online networks and online platforms in order to increase community synergy, performance and impact, have appeared; e.g., the software platform management and repository: <a href="http://sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">http://sourceforge.net/</a>. Freely Accessible Technologies and Knowledge Resources have a strong potential for generating Social Benefits (Endogenous Development, Social Autonomy, Social Self-Organization, Education and Learning, Organisational and Institutional improvement). Their promise resides in both the potential to create local communities cultivating their own know-how in accordance to the local social needs, and in the applications of their products. This has been particularly well cultivated in the traditions of ancestral societies. This book aims at contributing in understanding better and collecting relevant experiences in this subject, addressing issues such as the conceptualization of the phenomena, difficulties and challenges, as well as valuable applications.
