Joakim .. HI .. long time no hear from. Well in North America is rather active right now on two fronts. First The Canadian CRTC in Jan actually ordered a Carrier ENUM DB. Yes Ordered. Look up CRTC Policy 2012-24 (link below ) discussions among the Canadian Telecom Technical Advisory Committees proceeding. The US FCC ICC/USF Reform Report and Order in December 2011 discussed that carriers are encouraged to negotiate "in good faith" on VoIP Interconnection with the goal of killing POTS once and for all. ( you don’t need to read the whole thing its 750 pages long). Negotiation in "good faith" is actually a serious regulatory term of art in US Telecom law. The END of TDM Class X and POTS is the key policy goal in a path to an all broadband network. This does not mean the end of voice or the PSTN.. or E.164 numbering. The social contract for a universal voice etc service based on E.164 numbering is still a central policy goal. Carriers that take Universal Service funds, now called Connect America, are required to offer a voice service over their broadband networks. The end of POTS was outlined in the US National Broadband Plan as well as the formal FCC Technical Advisory Committee report to the Commission. Workshops have been held ..yours truly testified etc. http://www.broadband.gov/plan/ http://transition.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2012/db0206/FCC-11-1 61A1.pdf http://transition.fcc.gov/oet/tac/TACJune2011mtgfullpresentation.pdf http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-24.htm All of these are private carrier ENUM (red) like systems though RFC 6116 itself may only be a access method to a IP centric centralized numbering database. VoIP interconnection for voice is proceeding at a accelerated rate now estimated by the FCC at nearly 28% of all Voice traffic or so driven by US Cable Operators who have used the Service Provider Identification Code in the NPAC to identify the terminating carrier of record and then use bi-laterally agreed to data to find the points of interconnection ( typically the carrier Session Border Controller). This is fine for a limited set of carriers but will have scaling issues if all 1200 licensed US carriers need to participate. Key business drivers for VoIP Interconnection databases (aka ENUM) are VoLTE due to deploy in 2014 in US and SIP Trunking in the Enterprise which grew at nearly 120% in 2011. Residential ATT uVerse and Verizon FIOS now all SIP/IMS based as well. In addition there is serious concerns about the state of the TDM infrastructure with the 5ESS and DMS platforms at or near End of Life status. Parts are known to be in short supply. Discussions proceeding but as you all know the US is having its national quadrennial mud wrestling fight and I don’t expect too much activity until after November. -----Original Message----- From: enum-wg-bounces at ripe.net [mailto:enum-wg-bounces at ripe.net] On Behalf Of Carsten Schiefner Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2012 3:13 AM To: enum-wg at ripe.net Cc: Joakim.Stralmark at pts.se; Erika.Hersaeus at pts.se Subject: [enum-wg] Some questions of the present status of the different "ENUM" flavours Dear ENUM WG colleagues, the following email has reached the Co-Chairs from Joakim Stralmark of PTS, the Swedish Telecommunications Regulator. And although quite some data is available at: http://www.enumdata.org/ we agreed that presenting his set of questions to the broader audience of this Working Group might help to gather even more and more accurate data on this. Please note that the attached PDF document has been created by me from Joakim's Powerpoint document - as I am not sure that everybody would be able to open a file in PPTX format. Kind regards, Carsten Schiefner RIPE ENUM WG Co-Chair -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Some questions of the present status of the different "ENUM" flavours Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2012 22:37:12 +0200 From: <Joakim.Stralmark at pts.se> To: <Enumvoipsip.cs at schiefner.de> CC: <Erika.Hersaeus at pts.se> *Dear Mr. Schiefner* *Co-Chair of the RIPE ENUM WG* The Swedish NRA (PTS) are doing some quick research of the present status off the different flavours of “ENUM”. Our intention is just to make an overview figure there the different domains for “ENUM” are shown, both for “User ENUM” and “Infrastructure ENUM” (in the figure green means public DNS and red means private DNS). We understand that the RIPE ENUM WG might have a good understanding of the present status of “ENUM” around the world. We have questions around this topic in relation to our enclosed figure: 1. How many countries are _active_ in “User-ENUM” for domains <CC>.e164.arpa? 2. How many countries are _active_ in some form of national “Infrastructure-ENUM” in some non-e164.arpa domains (e.g. the US CC1 ENUM LLC with e164enum.us domain or the DE-CIX in Germany)? 3. How many federations (like GSMA Path-Finder with e164enum.net domain) are you aware of in the international or national arena (e.g. XConnect, NetNumber)? 4. Are there any countries doing business in the IETF suggested domain ie164.arpa for “Infrastructure-ENUM”? Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
