At the same time RFC1183 defines a method of incorporating contact information for zones into the DNS itself. Doesn't this invalidate the rationale for keeping information about domains in the database? No, it doesn't. The 'whois' service is just to easy and widely in use for this purpose already that you cannot suddenly switch to another method. The only way to do that would be in a worldwide coordination action where the domain information would be removed from the NIC whois database too. Personnally I don't see that happen. Piet
