A typical IXP is based on a Layer2 design with a GE/10GE switch. The IXP usually also hosts route-servers to help peers exchange routes. The route-servers only exchange routes between peers, they are usually transparent to the AS Path and do not manipulate the next-hop. For managing your IXP I can recommend IXP Manager: https://github.com/inex/IXP-Manager It is open-source and comes with a great community and developers. Kind regards, Dominik
