Yepp -- thank you both for the clarifications.
FWIW, a small thank-you note to derMouse bounced with
... while talking to sparkle-4.rodents.montreal.qc.ca.:
<<< 550-.de's whois server, whois.denic.de, is completely broken, handing
<<< 550-out no contact information at all when queried for .de domains in
<<< 550 the usual way. Such a domain has no place on a civilized network.

Granted that a mere "whois -h whois.nic.de gaertner.de" will tell you
little. Get the whole scoop including contact information with
whois -h whois.nic.de ' -T dn gaertner.de'
[The funny quoting for the initial blank is used to pass the RIPE whois
style options to the server.] Yes, I don't like the diversifications
of the various whois servers either. At least one doesn't have to
jump through CAPTCHAs with .de queries.
